Something to test ones liberal position.

You are at a pharmacy and the teen boy who's taking your 16 year old daughter to a dance that night is making a purchases of condoms.

  1. Okay...you know me well enough by now to know I'm fairly conservative on many issues and am a regular church-goer so my response to this scenario might surprise you. I personally don't see it as an indicator of a conservative or liberal position, but a realistic position. Having raised three kids (two of those girls), I know that no matter what we tell them, they're ultimately going to make their own decisions. I could go into lengthy detail on what our thoughts were regarding sex (from the parental viewpoint) and how we presented it to our kids, but I'll spare you. Even though they knew what we wanted/hoped from them, they also knew all the options.

So, I guess my first thought in the pharmacy would be one of relief that the boy had the sense to use condoms. Of course there would also be some major lecturing going on when I got home. ;)

    1. I wanted to throw it out to see if it would be different.
Now you've been a bit of a shock quite honestly. :-)

  2. I read this during a lengthy meeting after school this afternoon and have been forming my comment in my head since then. :)
I agree! Better safe than sorry. You can tell kids how "wrong" sex is at their age all you want, but you're just shooting yourself in the foot if that's where the conversation ends. Having teenagers has got to be so frightening and I can see where parents/schools/communities are so afraid to talk about sex, feeling like they're "promoting" it. But let's be serious, there are a lot of things that promote sex including just being a hormonal teen. Educating kids to be smart about it, if they are going to do it, is so very wise. I'm sure as a parent, that scenario would leave a lump in your throat knowing what the kids were planning (or what he was planning anyhow) but looking at the situation from the outside at least he is planning and making sure we don't end up with a teenage pregnancy or a disease.

You might find this interesting. It's lengthy, but eye opening...

    1. To be totally honest, if I was on the fence about something being hectored by some English tit is not going to bring me down on his side.

Yeah, the crux was what I was seeing alright. It must be something even the levelest of parents must struggle.

    2. Ha ha ha! He's married to an American and has us residency...if that helps any. But on the other hand, maybe it doesn't. ;)

  3. This is a tough one--my first response is to stock up on shotgun shells, but I would probably go home and talk to my daughter...

    1. Hmm, I can see that thought readily coming to mind. And I can see how Dad knowing what daughter was about would put a very serious crimp in the plans, which is what that little chat would achieve.
