Thrift Shop win

On a tour of some of the local thrift shops I found a leather coat. Flawless but for a need for a bit of leather treatment and replacing two of the five buttons.
It's a bit big on me, but I feel with a leather you can get away with a bit bigger.
But it was the quest for the replacement buttons that threw up something interesting. Now it may be the buttons are two a penny in the USA but I've never seen a button with a Great Seal on it. And while I expect CHIPs back in the day had something I sure wasn't expecting to see a jacket with the Great Seal of the State of Oklahoma in a 2nd hand shop in Tipperary, so far from home.
Now of course is the question of how the flying fandangos do I find the two to replace the missing ones. I suspect the remaining three will be removed and replaced. Leaving a query to whomever clears out my stuff post departure of this life. :-D

  1. What a great find... and how odd about the buttons! Does make one wonder how Oklahoma ended up in Ireland.

  2. Wow! Very interesting indeed! I wouldn’t completely discount being able to find replacements for the missing ones as the internet seems to have everything! You might find some on eBay or even Etsy. If you’re on Facebook, you might even be able to go into a local buy/sell/trade in Oklahoma and plead your case. It’s not a complete impossibility!

    1. Yep, I hadn't checked on ebay before I put the post together. It seems they are fairly readily gettable, even here. €3 for 5 and with P&P probably €8-10.

    2. I may have an issue getting the buttons on, for the current lot are held by steel rings in between the two layers. My mother says get over yourself sew it like normal, but I think the original may be a better means for leather.
It's like a key ring for all the world.

  3. Back in the day, if I needed a button I would simply find one in my grandmother's button box. She always had one just like the one I was missing. Sounds like you did find some already. I love a well made and well broken in leather jacket.

    1. Yep, that was the way it was. But nowadays the quality of the cloth won't outlast the stitching of the button.

  4. Maybe you should look around in Craigslist in Oklahoma. You might find two buttons, or sell your three and buy five buttons from another part of the world.
