From a broadcast about about two padre's in WW1.

Had a listen for a bit. The stories are horrible.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that "the reason why" is common theme when discussing ww1. I didn't know if the confusion stemmed from my history classes here, but it seems it was a convoluted war no matter how you look at it.
This makes me chuckle...

It is certain, I feel, that there would be a war in Europe sometime before 1930. And it probably would've been as bloody in it's own way. But the proximate cause was the killing of Franz-Ferdinand in Bosnia by a Serb.
DeleteThins is if F-F wasn't in a car that went down a wrong road requiring it to reverse the killer wouldn't have the shot.
You see what made WW1 so bloody was it was a return to siege warfare and was the tech a few year on, the armies wouldn't have been far more mobile.
Thanks for posting this link--I come across Ian Poulton again! I thought he did a wonderful job describing the work of the chaplains in horrific circumstances.
ReplyDeleteNo worries Jeff.
DeleteYes those men were dedicated.
