There was about 50 people standing awaiting a visible sunrise that never arrived.
I could've gone the day before, I could even have gone this morning, and found a clear as crystal sky's. In truth, the mid winter or mid summer isn't, nor wasn't a spot on precise day, but a bracketing of 3/4 days either side of the active solstice.
Anywoos, here's a shot of a modern day druid. And the bottom two are of the evening passage tomb.

To those who want a bit more meat this is the Jstor connection to the The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland

I think missing perfect lighting as a photographer is par for the course. I've been so many places where I wished I had been there in the morning, afternoon, etc for the perfect lighting.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't so much bothered not having good light for the camera as missing the illumination of the passage between the stones.
DeleteI've been out many times to see the sunset and it failed to produce... I didn't go out to see it on the soloistice but it should have been a good one here.
ReplyDeleteYes, but the sometimes lack of performance is what makes it really excellent when it does.
DeleteIt's still a lovely place, even if you/they didn't get the hoped for sunrise. I do think it's those unexpected sunrises and sunsets that are often the most beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, oddly enough, you get a clear morning on the 21st or a day or two eitherside. It could be tipping down from November 1st and again til Feb 1st, but those few either side, at least one of five will be clear as crystal.
