The fisherman

  1. What a great capture! One of these days I'll learn to use my fly rod.

Our last outing was not very successful. We've had too much wind and fresh water lately.

    1. Thanks. I havent really been fishing since I got Jess. She really freaks out with the swish of the rod and line. And since I think it's a crime to keep her in the car, and since she pulls out of harnesses and collars it means I've little action at all.
Yeah, wind can be a bugger especially if you have overhead trees, or anything that can tangle the lines.

Ohh, if you want to practice casts, tie a down feather from a pillow to the leader. And in an open space place a playing card on the grass and see how close you get laying the feather to the card. As to the difference between the spinning and fly reels, and the casting action. After a while with the fly you'll find the action of the fly rod is way more natural and instinctive in the movements.
Oh, remember once you have the card and feather down to a reasonable distance you now have to do it from the position you'd normally address the water. With you off a skiff, you should park your butt on a bucket or whatever height your seat on the boat is.

    2. I can remember practicing in our swimming pool when I first started with a rod and reel. Depending on the kind of lure I'm using (I'm best with plastic worms and a weight), I can get pretty accurate with my casts! :)

I'll have to try your suggestions with the fly rod.

  2. I used to spend a lot of time fly fishing but gradually I figured out that if I want to catch fish to eat, I can do it easier with a spin caster and the proper lure. However, if I just want the thrill of catching a fish, nothing beats a fly rod. Back when I was learning, I did the feather thing but my target was always a Frisbee. I little more forgiving the a small playing card!

    Excellent picture!

    1. Yep. Frizbee, playing card, plate. Lid off of a pot, it's just something to aim and measure your aim.
