Ugly and pretty at the same time.

I bought this thing in a 2nd hand shop when I was trawling for ultra cheap props to photograph. The mechanism was a dud so I did a bit of surgery and replaced the works with another I had from a wrist watch.

I'm really not sure if I like the thing. But it's been sitting atop my PC tower on my desk since I fixed it.

  1. Is Waterford Crystal as popular in Ireland as it is here? Here we ohhhhh and awwwww over it.
The clock looks like a very nice piece to me, and now that it works I'd assume you've added some value to it. An impressive fix! Do you have any idea how old it is? I've heard most of the crystal isn't really made there anymore as they outsource it elsewhere, but maybe you've got a piece that is local.

    1. It was. It was with my grandmothers generation. I'd say lusted after back then. It was the prize of choice for almost any big sporting event, retirement in lieu of a gold watch, and so forth. But would only be used by bishops and the like on a daily basis, I assume. I'm not one who got invited to attack a chateaubriand in a bishops palace.
To be honest, and since I wrote this, it's the mix of the crystal and the Roman numerals that draws me I think.

Under it, it says Waterford ireland. So it's made here. You can believe that here i the EU. They're shit hot on that type of thing. Mostly it has to be said due to Milan and Paris designers getting stuff knocked off.

  2. I like the clock works part of it because that is truly a timeless style. However, I'm not big on the glass part of it. Perhaps it is the woodworker in me but those clock works would look better in a richly stained piece of wood.

    1. It's play on a Mantle Clock https://www.1-800-4clocks.com/miva/graphics/full/MOK-7003.jpg. And they were in timber.

    2. We have a couple mantle clocks set in wood that have been given to us as gifts over the years. I think they are timeless in style.

  3. I think crystal can look quite beautiful in the right setting. I have one room this might look very nice in, but for the most part my home is too casual and eclectic for crystal.

Good for you for repairing it! If anything, you can now sell it at a profit should the urge hit.

    1. Yes I agree. But it needs light for it to sparkle. I think that why it took off in the USA.

      Sell ?. I paid a €1 for it.
