New camera test

I bought a Sony A7 about 3 weeks ago and have been testing it since. It has a full frame sensor and 24 mpix resolution. But it has an electronic viewfinder rather than a pentaprism or a through and through viewfinder like in the old days.
It's also mirrorless meaning it's thinner front to back but more or less the same face on. But what it does mean is that with the use of connectors you can put any lense on it. However this also means you don't have active Auto Focus which on a high resolution can be the death of an image if you miss it with your eye. Here are some of the results.

  1. Some of these are incredibly sharp. I particularly like the first four. (2 and 4 being my favorites) With that type of camera (as opposed to my phone or point & shoot) I definitely need an automatic setting.

    1. Some of them are very sharp, but my hit rate with it isn't good. And I use manual glass on the Nikon and you could shave with the result. And the Sony has focus peaking in the viewfinder so should be far better getting acceptable sharpness.

  2. Those are some very nice pictures, Vince, and seems to me the new camera is working perfectly for you. I’m especially partial to the one of the moon!

    1. Like I said to Kelly, I think a hit rate of 1 in 5 isn't good. Even if the results are. I really have to think very hard about it.

  3. A Sony?!?!? What? ;). I had a couple of Sonys before my canon that were considered slr-like and they were soooo nice, plus the viewing screen was gorgeous. I looked a bit at the mirrorless before getting my current camera, I wasn't sure what to make of it. It looks like you are enjoying it. The photos are nice. Are you thinking this will be a replacement for your Nikon or an addition?

    1. I've been in the market for a full frame for a while now and was looking at a Nikon D750. But I got a manual 85mm lense for the Culture Night shoot and found I could focus as quick by hand as with the motor. That opened to Sony mirrorless system for I could get really good really cheap legacy glass from the days of film by just adding an adaptor.

  5. I don't think my eyes are good enough to clearly focus based off past experience. But with digital cameras, unless time is a factor, generally I can get it through trial and error and constant checking of the digital image stored on the camera. Excellent pictures!
