I cannot fathom this wall at all. The other day I went and took this using lights to bring up some of the details.
None of it makes that much by way of sense. But the one I'm totally stumped by the mermaid with the wand in the bottom right with the mullet and the flounder.
It's a wall on the south nave of Kilcooly Abbey

Now you have me quite curious, too, and you know I won't be the only one. You'll have to track down the answer! Mermaid lore is abundant and I'm sure there's an interesting story behind that.
ReplyDeleteIn my historical reading, Mermaid lore was around in the 15th century but according to Wiki, this place dates back to the 12th century. I wonder how far back mermaid lore goes back?
ReplyDeleteYou ought to turn this photo into Wikipedia as the one of they have the arch pales in comparison to yours. :)
ReplyDeleteThis http://homepage.eircom.net/~archaeology/three/mermaid.htm theorizes the mermaid is symbol for the weakness of man. You're better equipped to determine whether this seems accurate or not, but it looks like you weren't the only one who was curious. The fish are also odd? All the other carvings look like they belong in a church, but the fish and mermaid are an odd choice. Is she holding a mirror?
All !.
ReplyDeleteI'll see if I can get a better shot of each element. And Kimberly, I'll see if I can load it up.
