A PSA

The new win 10 hasn't been any success. My pc locked me out last Tuesday and I haven't been able to get back in. I rang Microsoft who told me to contact Dell, who sent me back to Microsoft, who told me to go to a local technician. That's where it is since yesterday morning.
The most likely outcome is everything is wiped out with a new install. But I could well be totally locked out.
The public service announcement bit is back up to an external hard drive before you think of installing the new operating system.

  1. Ugh! I'm sorry, what a bummer! The fact that there was a bug is not really a surprise since ms's new operating systems are often riddled with problems, but the fact that no one is helping is, and rather frustrating I'm sure. This might be a stupid question, but have you tried any of the online user forums? Maybe someone else has run into the same issues and has some tips. Did you make a back up (I hope)?

    1. Not anywhere near as much as I should have.

  2. I'm very sorry to hear this! I hope you can find a resolution without having lost too much information and will definitely steer clear of Win 10 for now.

    1. Ohh me too, me too. And yes keep well away, they are back telling everyone this is a complete system but what's happened to me shows it isn't anywhere near ready to be sent public.

  3. I've never installed a new operating system on top of an old one because I've always been worried about something like that happening. I also feel that a fresh install would also be better than just coping new files onto a hard drive while using some of the old ones. Another factor is that the cost of a new operating system is about half the cost of a new computer with it installed these days. Thanks for the heads up though because I'm going to need to do something as this software is sadly getting out of date and no longer supported by Windows anymore.

P.S. I have used Carbonite to automatically back up my files to the "cloud" for a couple years now. The only files it doesn't copy are my tax prep files which contain personal identification but for all the rest, pictures mostly, it works well and you never had to worry if your computer takes a dive. You just get DVD's mailed to you when you get your computer fixed or replaced and upload the files once again.

    1. I don't know, my usual filters weren't up. Normally I wouldn't move until at least a year and the bugs had been sorted. But in my defense, this has been going for more than a year.

Yes I must establish better cloud storage. On that I've only put up whats fundamental for I've asymmetric broadband. Down is fast enough but up isn't much faster than dial-up at 220.
