These are taken on my little Samsung and show the corners of the frame I'm making. I'm going with the Brutalist theme as it matches the image. Since this is a jury selection, I don't know if it will be accepted. Soo fingers crossed.
Very nice and impressive. It looks like a lot of work, and I know those mitered corners (that's what they are, right?) aren't easy. I'm assuming you will paint or stain them? What color? How many do you enter? I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to hearing what you submitted. :)
I could enter three, but I am doing one only. And yes, those corner's are not easy. In fact I could say that they are a female dog. But marrying them this time was somewhat easier. I used a luggage strap to squeeze them in. I'll sand and see if I'll varnish, but I was thinking not. I want it base, even blunt. Unvarnished truth if you will. But maybe I am going too heavyhanded.
Somehow I never actually published what I replied this morning... I bet when you get the photos behind them, you'll know if the wood alone works, or if you'll need a deeper color. I like the light wood, but your photos may need more. The clear varnish is a good idea, just to keep it "safe".
Miters are tough to make. I generally cut one scrap stick of wood at a forty five and then join the two to form a right angle which I check with a square. I make minute adjustments until just perfect but sometimes it takes me two or three trials to get there. I also have a 45 triangle to get me close on attempt one but the teeth of my table saw are wider than the blade body and I can't use it to get exact.
If you want to go Brutalist, I would probably just put a few coats of clear satin polyurethane over the show side. This will preserve the light colored wood from dirt smudges but not take away from the color.
Yes, I'll varnish it with a slight stain. I'd forgotten until you said just how easy it is to mark the darn thing with your fingers. I made it loosely to the golden ratio, but I couldn't get glass or perspex. The nearest was 2x3. And I've made it too darn exact and have to sand down to get the glass to fit. :-).
I can't show it here as it's publishing it. But it's of a wood of young trees with the sunset through it, making it look like it's alight like a forest fire. I titled it Emigration. It's all blacks, reds, oranges and yellows.

What image are you entering? I guess we have to wait and see once it's framed and ready to go. :)

DeleteIt sounds wonderful! Hope it's accepted and that we can see it "after the fact". (maybe with a "best in show ribbon" on it?)
DeleteNice work and hopefully it'll make your photos stand out.
